Blue Buffalo™ of Wilton, Connecticut, has issued a recall for batches of a variety of the company’s products. Issued on October 8, 2010, the recall is for the some of the company’s Blue Wilderness® line of products, including 4.5-lb bags of Chicken Flavor dry dog food, “best by” dates of JULY2611Z, JULY2711Z, AND JULY2811Z; 11-lb bags of Chicken Flavor dry dog food with a “best by” date of JULY1211B; and 24-lb bags of Chicken Flavor dry dog food with “best by” dates of JULY1211B and LUKY1311B.
Also included in the recall are Blue Basics™ 11-lb bags of Limited Ingredient Formula Salmon and Potato dry dog food with “best by” dates of AUG2111B and AUG2211B and 24-lb bags with “best by” dates of AUG2111B, SEP2311P, and OCT2611P. One last product included in the recall is Blue Buffalo™ Life Protection Formula Natural Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe Large Breed Adult dog food, with “best by” dates of SEP2211P, SEP2311P, and OCT2611P.
The reason for the recall is due to high levels of Vitamin D, which can cause lethargic activity or higher than usual water consumption and urination. If you believe your pet has eaten the affected product and shows signs of the symptoms listed above, contact your veterinarian immediately.
The error in production occurred when switching from a product requiring a higher Vitamin D content to that of the dog food in question, resulting in elevated levels of Vitamin D in the recalled products. Blue Buffalo™ learned of the error in the product manufacturing process when the company received complaints of dogs with symptoms of elevated Vitamin D levels.
