As of July 2, 2015, Stella and Chewy’s was ordered by the Maryland Department of Agriculture to issue a recall for Chewy’s Chicken Freeze-Dried Dinner Patties for Dogs in 15 oz. bags. This recall was issued because they detected Listeria monocytogenes in this product. The dog food in question came from Lot # 111-15.

So far, no one has reported any illness by a dog or human as a result of this contamination. However, just to make sure this doesn’t happen, Stella & Chewy’s has decided to recall all products which were made in Lot # 111-15. They are doing this voluntarily, even though the other products have not tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. This precautionary measure is being taken as these products may have been exposed to the affected lot.

In order to determine whether or not you have any of this food listed below in your possession, compare the product description, the bag size, the UPC number, the lot code and the use by date which are located on the back of the bag. Should you find that you have any of the affected food, do not use it and return it to wherever you purchased it, in order to get your money back.  Even if you have Stella & Chewy’s products that are not included in the recall, the company says if you are hesitant to give it to your dog, to go ahead and return the food for a refund as well.

What Is Listeria?

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and those who have weakened immune systems. Those that are healthy may experience symptoms such as a high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. A listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. Should your pet be exposed to listeria, they would have similar symptoms to humans.

If you believe your pet has been exposed to listeria, take them to the veterinarian immediately for an examination. If this is the case, Stella & Chewy’s wants to speak with you. Please contact them by email or give them a call at 888-477-8977.
