Natural Balance® Pet Foods of Pacoima, California, has issued a recall for its Natural Balance® Sweet Potatoes & Chicken Dry Dog Food on June 8, 2010. The products in question have a “Best By” date of 6/17/11 and are sold in 5- and 28-pound bags.

The product was recalled due to potential contamination by the Salmonella bacteria. The affected product includes Natural Balance® 5-lb bags of Sweet Potato & Chicken Dry Dog Formula UPC 72362290004 and 28-lb bags of Sweet Potato & Chicken Dry Dog Formula UPC 723633990028.

The recalled items were only sold in stores located in the states of Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

The recall occurred when a sample from the affected batches with a “Best By” date of 6/17/11 tested positive for Salmonella. The test was administered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). More information about the recall can be found on its Website at .

Symptoms of Salmonella contamination include fever, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. If consumers think they or their pet have been exposed to the bacteria, they should contact a health professional or veterinarian.
