A recall has been issued by Merrick® Pet Care, operating out of Amarillo, Texas. The product in question includes the company’s Beef Filet Squares for Dogs; and the recall was issued on July 2, 2010.

The recall includes 876 cases of the companies 10-oz Beef Filet Squares for Dogs with a “best by” date of 3/24/12. The product also has an item number of 60016 and a lot number of 10084TL7. The recall is due to potential Salmonella contamination. The affected product was shipped to retailers and distribution points across the United States, though individual locations have been notified and have initiated their recall procedures.

The recall was initiated when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) collected a surveillance sample. This sample subsequently tested positive for Salmonella. Salmonella infection, while not always evident in dogs, can affect both humans and their pets. Some of the primary symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. If consumers think they or their pets have come into contact with the bacteria, they should seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled product can return unused portions to their place of purchase for a full refund.
