Jones Natural Chews® Co., located in Rockford, Illinois, announced a recall of 2,705 cases of the company’s Pig Ear products on March 8, 2011. The products in question were shipped to retailers and distributors in the states of Connecticut, Iowa, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

The pigs ears were recalled due to possible contamination with Salmonella bacteria, which was detected through routine sampling by the Washington State Department of Agriculture. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include lethargic behavior, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting in pets. Humans infected with the bacteria display such symptoms as nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. If consumers think they or their pets have become infected, they should seek the help of a medical professional or veterinarian.

The possible contaminated products involved in the recall include Jones Natural Chews® Pig Ears 2-pack bag with UPC 741956001047, lot 2420; bulk 100-count box with UPC 741956001139, lots 2490, 2560, 2630, 2700, 2840, 2910, 2980; 50-count box with UPC 741956001504, lots 2490 and 2840; 25-count box with UPC 741956001467, lot 2700; 1-pack shrink-wrapped item with UPC 741956001146, lots 2700, 2840, and 2420; and 10-pack printed bags with UPC 741956001405, lots 2420, 2560, 2630, and 2840.

Also contained within the recall are Blain’s Farm & Fleet® Pig Ears 10-piece bags with UPC 741956001405, lot 2560; and Country Butcher® Dog Chews 1-pack shrink wrapped item with UPC 741956001511, lot 2630; 1-pack shrink wrapped item with UPC 741956001146, lot 2420; and 12-pack bags with UPC 741956001245, lot 2910.
