Multinational consumer goods company Procter & Gamble™ (P&G™) has expanded an earlier recall to include batches of its Iams® Veterinary and Eukanuba® dog food items on July 30, 2010.

Salmonella contamination is cited as the reason for the recall. The affected products include Iams® Veterinary Dry Formulas — all dry sizes and varieties with “best by” dates between 7/1/10 and 12/1/11; Eukanuba® Naturally Wild and Pure dog foods — all dry sizes and varieties with a “Best By” date between 7/1/10 and 12/1/11; and Eukanuba® Custom Care Sensitive Skin dog food — all dry sizes with a “best by” date between 7/1/10 and 12/1/11.

The contaminated batches were sold at veterinary clinics and pet retail stores across the United States and Canada. Luckily, all of the affected products were made at a single facility. When the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined that some of the products made there had been potentially contaminated with Salmonella, P&G™ decided to recall all the products manufactured at this facility with the affected “best by” dates.

Infection by Salmonella can lead to diarrhea, decreased appetite, abdominal pain, and fever. Untreated, Salmonella can lead to lethargic activity, bloody stool, and vomiting. If consumers think their pet has been contaminated by Salmonella, they should seek the immediate help of their veterinarian.
