A Dog’s Basic Needs

Logically, dogs require food, water, and shelter to survive. However, they also need to be physically taken care of, their mind challenged, and their spirits nurtured in order for them to really thrive. Providing these key elements is a necessary formula for keeping your dogs happy and healthy. With that being said, let’s touch upon each area of a dog’s basic needs.

Quality Dog Food

Do the best you can budget-wise when it comes to dog food. Don’t skimp on quality, but that doesn’t mean you have to buy the costliest on the shelf either. Do your research ahead of time to choose a food that is nutritionally balanced. After choosing a food, watch how your dog’s body responds to it over a couple of weeks. If their coat appears dull, their energy is low or they are having digestive issues, you may want to ask your vet for a suggestion on the right food for your dog.

Its Own Dedicated Space

Though most dogs enjoy being around the family, dogs still need a place indoors where they can go to be alone. A bed, kennel or crate are all possibilities. They should be located in a quiet spot in your home where your dog can relax and unwind.

Physical Care

Making sure that your dog gets enough exercise is critical in keeping them healthy. Commit to walking with them at least once a day.

Every dog needs to visit a veterinarian at least once a year. Doing this can help to identify and treat any illness that may exist before your dog is even showing any symptoms.

Basic grooming is another must-do. Your dog needs a regular bath, toothbrushing with doggie toothpaste, and nail trimming. Depending on the breed, some dogs need regular haircuts.

Learn to groom your dog on your own or find a reputable groomer and stay on schedule to take care of your dog’s grooming needs.

What You Need

Consider what other things you may find necessary in taking care of your pup. For instance, many people feel that a dog crate is absolutely essential, while others choose to train their dogs without one. Here is a quick summary of a dog’s basic needs:

  • Quality dog food (and clean fresh water)
  • Bed, crate, or doghouse
  • Grooming supplies
  • Toys
  • Daily exercise
  • Veterinary care
  • Affection and attention

Nurture Your Dog

Preserving the human-dog bond a little each day is healthy for you and your dog. Remember that dogs need human interaction to be happy. Take a few minutes each day to just pet your dog, talk to your dog, or play with your dog. Go on a car ride or on a walk together. Just spend time in each other’s presence.
